I have been approached by a company that wants me to pay $4k to have them host a blog for me. Near as I can tell, all they will do for me, they claim, is "ping" the major search engines everytime I post to the blog. Is that of any value? Can't I do that myself?
Yes, you could do that yourself. Unless they are going to actually write the posts for you, forget about it. $4,000/month is ridiculous. How do they stay in business charging prices like that?
The blog thing is easy, I have figured that out and created a blog on Blogger (http://allforpetz.blogspot.com/). They do offer other services, but the big thing this guy was pushing was the fact that they will ping the search engines when I post to the blog. Is that something that I can do myself? Does Blogger do that?
Many blogging frameworks have pinging built-in, like WordPress and Drupal.
You can purchase a year's worth of web hosting for about $5 a month, and most web hosts have Fantastico script support that lets you automatically install either Drupal or Wordpress.
I can't believe companies are trying to take advantage of people who don't know better... $4000 per year is really gutsy, but I guess you only need one person to sign-up to make a serious profit.
Wordpress will do pinging for you, each and everytime you post for free.
You should post the web address of the company and everyone at this forum could send them an email a day for the next year telling them what scum they are. Anyone else with me?

I think I deleted that site, but I will dig it up. In the meantime, based on input from this forum, I figured out how to ping Google myself, at http://blogsearch.google.com/ping.
