Curious which platforms everyone likes? Would like opinions on platforms such as osCommerce, Zen Cart, CubeCart, X Cart etc...

None. I'd rather build my own for these reasons:

1) It's scratch code, which makes it leaner and meaner.

2) It's customizable to my clients' needs, and I've done some pretty funky stuff.

3) Because it's customized, a hacker is a lot less likely to target it because there's less gain from it.

4) I don't like paying other people for things.

Personally my favourite is www.jshop.co.uk - but the choice of cart always depends on what the customer needs

I personally have worked with osCommerce and X-Cart. And I heard that Zen Cart is a source fork of X-Cart so it is the same crap.

From this list I would definetely recommend you X-Cart.
It is not the best there is, but:
1. It is template driven and relatively easy for design customization
2. It is modularized (In the real sense of the word modularized)
3. It has Huge community base and hundreds of quality and Stable modules
4. It has many features even in its base

Drawbacks for X-Cart is that it has too many templates and it is backwards compatible with the time when the Internet was in its infancy. That's the reason I would recommend LiteCommerce as a better solution.

I can't talk about CubeCart, because I have no experience with it.

And I don't even wanna talk about osCommerce or ZenCart.

Zen Cart is definitely not the same crap. It has changed so much since the it forked off that the reference to OSC is almost the only thing left to tie them together.

Zen Cart's templating system is more standards compliant and the look can be completely changed just from the style sheets.

Personally, I agree with Damyan Mirchev.
X-cart is very professional and convenient, new version have a lot of cool features and their templates compliant with modern standards. I was very pleased with integrated wysiwyg editor and complete multilingual support.

P.S. With default skins X-cart and Zen-cart look very similar

X-Cart is certainly a good one - their support rocks. As to others - Zen cart is quite a reliable one and i wonder why cre loaded wasn't mentioned.

It's hard to find a shopping cart which would suit everybody - all of them have some drawbacks. So people switch their shopping carts more often. Now even this process can be automated e.g. by web service cart2cart. Just provide the info and all your data is transferred without any efforts on your side.

X-cart and ZenCart are definitely 2 different solutions and never were related to each other in any way :-)
