$4K a month isn't that much. 100 sales at $40, 200 sales at $20.
All those who think it's too much are missing the point - working
online isn't about "bizopps" or MLM, or building downlines.
It's about creating a product that fulfills a need. If you can do
that, your potential is unlimited. Business online is just like doing
business offline, except you don't get to see your customers
face to face.

I agree it is a very attainable number, but I did not see any links to sites that sold a physical product.
I did not see the question defined on profit or gross figures. $4000 profit is very different than selling $4000 gross.

I dont think it would be too hard to have 4000 profit online. Depends on what you do. IE if you run a hosting company you are probably going to have pretty high costs to keep those servers going, but if you just sell web apps and whatnot you have very little costs, which makes it easier to get a big profit.

I don't think that it is that much money. I think when my web directory takes off I will be getting 10 paid review type submissions per day at $10 each. That $3,000 per month for that section of the site alone. It's just not there yet.
Not to mention advertising revenue and affiliate commissions. There is alot of developement involve but it is coming.
As for bizz ops and MLM, most of us are a little old for that. While you can make money with MLM only about 5% of people who do it have any success and most of the "heavy hitters" of MLM are people who already owned successful businesses and had some business management experience or education before they ever got started.
But really I see that business of selling business opportunities to pretty lucrative if you have the right business idea. You can look in Entrepreneur and find all kinds of ideas.
I mean really there are some good business models. I bought one of those 35,000 reports and articles on a CD and published a bunch of site with the articles, then I sold advertising on those sites to make money. I made over $900 one week. But then the sites search rankings dropped so people didn't want the ads anymore.
I have better business models to work with these days though. You have to have an entrpreneureal mind set or you just won't make real money.

I might sell physical goods on the site some day. But right now I am for the old adage "don't dig for gold, sell shovels" that's out of some book I read a few years back.

I'm still kind of new here and I'm not trying to be critical but, I am amazed that in a forum on a site by/for webmasters, that this would appear to be a high number.
$4K/month isn't even enough to quit my job over. I know many people who've gone the self employed route. So, they've got to be making a min of $10K/month just for stability.
How is it possible that experts in SEO are making less than this? At least 80% of the responders to this question seem to indicate that they aren't even close. A couple of the ones appearing to make money look more like ads than reality.
What's going on? I'm sorry but, this thread has left me confused.

4k a month might not be enough for everyone to up and quit their jobs over, however if you are making 2k a month working a 9-5 job and all of the sudden your making 4k a month with your own business it would be foolish not to think about dropping out of the rat race and pursing your business. I think 4k a month can go along way's for the average person, and the idea of 10k a month to be stable is absured! i can live very nicely on half of that as I currently do. I have seen people make upward's of 200k a year only to lose every single penny, and be worse off than those "poor" people like me only making 50k a year. If you know how to spend your money wisely you can live "stable" on 4k a month.

$4000 per month isn't really all that much, it is a starting point.

its not a wise question. sure of course everyone wants to make money, but if you asked someone to tell you how to make that amount of money, do you think that you could do same money ?
suppose that, i rent cars on my site and make $10.000, so that are you going to try to do same business ? Rather then, you might try to find the best idea for your fits, maybe like a hobby which might makes money, then work on it at least 3 months, then try to do market. see if there is a chance to make money, keep going on! if not, chance your subject and do the same process again.
hope it force you to do something instead of being lazy and searching for easy money.
best.

You must not be married ;-)
Going to 4K/month, I better make sure the life insurance is paid up before the conversation at home.
"Hi honey, I'm sick of working for the man. So, we're going to cut our income to a fraction, give up health insurance (we're healthy anyway) and retirement. Whatcha think?"
but, seriously. thats only 120K a year. Out of which you have to pay your own retirement and health insurance. BlueCross hits my employer up for $1500/month right now, that's 18K/year. Since the amount you can put in an IRA tax free is much less than you can put in a 401K, the retirement expense + taxes will be much higher. Hell, this is starting to look like 10K/month isn't even enough.
Working for yourself, you need the expected income to be higher to cope with market fluctuations.

That is a pretty good point. The idea is to double my income every year until I retire but not really going that good so far.

My sites have been growing slowly over the years. Right now I get about 500 a month in ads and more than that in sales. I would say 4k is very attainable and I am working my way there...lol I hope...lol
