how to make money with forums

im considering buying a motor racing forum i have seem for sale on ebay (racingforum.net) and was wondering, what is the most common way to make money with forums, advertising, adsence ? Thanks for the help

If it's really successful, you can also offer some sort of premium membership, where people would have access to excluisve features.

Do this! It is the BEST WAY to get money from a Forum.

The trick that you can put in it is having three different kinds of the Premium Membership (Ie. Bronze, Silver and Gold) and for it to be avaible for different periods of time (1 Month, 3 Months, 6 Months, 1 Year, For-life).

I have done this once with one of my previous Forum Role Playing Games and earned a little over 45$

Asking users to pay to access a forum is a sure way to have no users ever.
Advertising on your site is the greatest way to get money from forums in my opinion. Start off by having no adverts and as the sites reputation grows you can go in for the kill by higher bids being offered. SEO is important to get the high numbers of users needed for any benefit. Read the SEO forum on this site to see how you can improve your opportunity.

if your forums becomes somehing that your users are proud to be part of you can also consider having premium membership with something like special features, tshirts and that stuff
otherwise making them pay to use the forum will only turn into a general go away of your users

Adsense is the way to go.

I went to the site and it is down...

If it uses vBulletin there are some great hacks to include AdSense after the first post on every thread.

Definitely start by building the forum traffic and adding AdSense or other advertising. I think you can have the advertising inlcuded right away.

If you read through the posts enough I would think you'd see your visitors consistently mentioning things they would like to see or have. They wouldn't necessarily be meaning this about your forum, but about something in genral about racing. Once you know what the forum's visitors want then you can find a way to provide it for them through the forum and consider those things the exclusive features for which you could charge a membership.

Always keep the basic reading and posting free. Since you'll be collecting email addresses when people register you may ask on the signup form if people would be interested in receieving offers related to racing. For those that opt in you can then send periodic offers for products or information.
