Depending on what you plan to sell and how much processing volume you anticipate having, I'd recommend you have your site/shopping cart integrated with a payment gateway (authorize.net and USAePay are two good ones) and your own merchant account. A merchant services company that is an authorized reseller of authorize.net, for example, could set you up with both the gateway service and the credit card processing. Fees for gateways seem to be pretty standard industry-wide: usually around $15/month gateway access fee and $0.05/transaction. The rates for eCommerce merchant accounts can range between around 2.19% to over 5%, and $0.18-$0.30/transaction depending on what is being sold/the services being offered.
Unlike what I have often heard about PayPal holding a merchant's money without really giving cause, lack of a personal account representative, etc... having a merchant account from a good credit card processor tends to be pretty painless and gives you a lot more control over your money.
