I work in marketing and the advice I could give would be a such:

• know what you customers want and offer it to them in an attractive, easy to purchase manner
• good online customer experience not only benefits sales, it also leaves customers with a great, memorable experience that they will remember and communicate
• make sure you communicate your unique selling points, i.e. why customers should choose you over your competitors.
• try to bring an innovation into the market, it's gonna much easier to get noticed and for people to talk about you.

It is said over and over again, but its true. Patience is the biggest must for any ecommerce site. It seems like once the ball gets rolling and you have a quality site or product with good support, hard work pays off. A great host is a for sure must have. I have had experiences with hosts that seem a great deal, but 4 months in they havent expanded their server space but have added 1000's of sites, making my blogs load time so long it was essentially unreadable. Although i do not much payment infrastructure knowledge, it seems to be easier to get solid processing and order management than even a few years ago.
