Does anyone know a better payment system then paypal? I like paypal but hate the way they handle buyer disputes...is there some other payment system I could use that allows me and the company to take full responsibility in decisioning refunds (in other words not leave it up to paypal when to refund or not?)

Hate to say it but it's not up to you to decide who gets their money back. Yes, you control refunds. But you do not control chargebacks. If someone disputes a transaction you may lose that money regardless of whether or not you want to give that money back or think it is deserved. This is true with every processor. The only thing you can do is try to put yourself in a position where chargebacks are kept to a minimum.

Another option may be to use a third party processing service such as 2Checkout or ClickBank. These three services are basically a payment gateway and merchant account rolled into one and operated by the same company. In the case of ClickBank they also offer affiliate program features at no extra cost and all three also provide recurring billing services for subscription and premium membership services. These companies are also non-USA merchant friendly.

Are you in the US? If that's the case then there are many options for merchant accounts.

Google Checkout is a great option, specially if you're doing Adwords advertisiment.

yes tried google checkout, lost sales because people didn't like having to sign up at checkout...I'm gonna take a look at 2checkout....I just don't like how paypal deducts funds before making a decision.

2Checkout is good. Their technical support is very helpful, from 2co customers can actually use Google Checkout, Paypal and BillmeLater.

They actually require you to add your products in their control panel and pass all this information from your shopping cart when placing the order. Just make sure that your shopping cart is compatible with 2co.

Authorize.NET is a good gateway with competitive pricing for charging credit cards. However you will not be able to stop chargebacks as that is something nobody can stop.

When someone issue a chargeback, paypal have no choice but to refund the money back to the bank. The problem will lie with the bank issuing the credit card not paypal. On the side note, been using alertpay for two years now and been happy with their services

I am same with you.I am looking for the merchant account as well.But i don't know which one is better for my gambling site,which is considered the high risk business.So I tried to find the the high risk merchant account provider.I heard that Ctopay is a the suitable one.I have no idea.I just contact with the sales manager of ctopay--Yang(his skype account is ctopayhk2).From the conversation with him,I find it good,and will cooperate with him.I have no idea about paypal.But it is heard that paypal will resist the high risk busineess account.

What type of business are you in where you're worried so much about chargebacks?

They are inevitable, but offshore merchants are usually a bit better at combating chargebacks. But they're a lot more expensive.

That's true.. but if the decision is in your favor, Paypal shouldn't deduct $10 from your account. If the dispute is with a bank, the bank doesn't charge anything. So why should Paypal?

Those fees are considered punitive in order to motivate merchants to protect themselves against fraud.

When a customer files a dispute the processor has to investigate the transaction. This costs money so they pass it on to the merchant.

What really stinks is that "friendly fraud" is occurring a lot more often now because of the economy. It's when people who know full well that the transaction was legitimate but still file a dispute in the hopes that you will not fight back.

I don't want to use ONLY stores like iTunes, CDBaby etc.
and these big companies like PayPal, Google Checkout and 2CO for example take a base fee of 30$ + 2.9% (or even more) of the amount...
So that means there wouldn't be much left after a sale for a starving indie artist

Is there any really cheap payment system specialized into sales for SMALL amounts (ebooks, mp3s...) - should also accept credit cards...
