How about a social network for webmasters?

Will it work? Is there any money to be made from targeting such niche social network for webmasters?

I have a site targeting webmasters to promote, just sitting there and i dont know for sure if this gets going.

Any inputs much appreciated!

You could say this is a social network for webmasters..?

But seriously, I just don't believe webmasters would have any interest in something like that. A forum like this would be enough for me at least.

truly said!

Nonethless, i am gonna give a try to lure webmasters with a forum, blogs, articles and bookmarking all in one site, even it means a failure. My intent is not to make money.

Lets see what happens!

I tend to agree with dotservant.com in that you don't know until you try. However, I don't think this is a good idea if you plan on doing it in the conventional "social networking" sense, and here are the reasons:

<snip>

2) Social networks have shown themselves (e.g. Sphinn, StumbleUpon, Reddit, Del.icio.us) to be targets for spammers. Oh wait, I'm sorry; that's "Social Media Optimizers". If you're not aggressive with spam fighting, and this is extremely difficult given the sheer number and variety of spammers out there, your site will get eaten alive.

3) One of the things on the front page of your site is a "social network script". Sooner or later (likely sooner), every idiot out there who got tired with his phpLD script not making money will turn to this type of a script and set up their own "social networking niche site" (translation: a site used by five people, four of which are the webmaster's own relatives.) So your own site will get diluted again.

4) I agree with delighted's comment. Forums work as well as anything for webmasters. Just stick to those.

Your idea of a social network isn't that bad in principle. The problem is that you're targeting the wrong audience and that it will get killed as soon as others try to copy it.

I don't know about networking just for webmasters. I can see where it would be helpful but even webmasters need to network with the offline world.

I would suggest joining a regular networking site and then creating a group specifically for webmasters. LinkedIn.Com has been a great asset to me and my career.
