Its not quite that there were no characters, they have just bought the domain www. For example, if you could still get it, you could buy www.com (by just registering www). This would probably still work as www.www.com (as the www bit is simply a subdomain given by the server the domain is running on).
The www version of a top level domain (like www.lk) is often used by the registrar, but if you are trying to find out more about the domain and the www is not the registration page, you can try nic.domain (for example http://nic.info) or look at the country level domain list at http://www.icann.org |
