i have found the URL: "http://www.lk" and this is a real site. i was wondering why this domain is without any extention and why its working.

then, i tried "lk.com", "lk.net" and "lk.org" and found that these are totaly different websites.

can anyone tell me why they can have "lk" as their domain without extention, who does offer names like this

Hey,

.lk is a new secondary level domain.

I would not recommend buying one, but you can find more info here:

http://www.nic.lk/

yea like you may find a website called www.com or vwww.com

I think lk is an extension like .com or .net they just didnt register any characters when they bought the domain.

thats pretty cool though, www.lk

Its not quite that there were no characters, they have just bought the domain www. For example, if you could still get it, you could buy www.com (by just registering www). This would probably still work as www.www.com (as the www bit is simply a subdomain given by the server the domain is running on).

The www version of a top level domain (like www.lk) is often used by the registrar, but if you are trying to find out more about the domain and the www is not the registration page, you can try nic.domain (for example http://nic.info) or look at the country level domain list at http://www.icann.org

Hi xtravel,

What David just mentioned is totally correct. They simply registered the domain "www", just like someone would register "yahoo" or "amazon". So really, what they have is www.www.com...However, notice that you can also input yahoo.com and amazon.com without the "www" in front of it, and you'll end up with the same site. This is exactly what these people are doing. www.www.lk is the exact same thing as www.lk. I hope I've explained it clearly enough.

LK apparently is Sri Lanka. There are many other domain extensions that you can find at www.iana.org
