Thanks, it would be domain name registration and full service solutions such as domain renewals, transfers, web hosting, domain enhancements etc, i know i would need a team of people to administer but i assume i need a servor application? im more a businessperson rather then techie, my apologies, im just wondering what the basic setup structure or architecture would consist of as well as proposed costs?

To be honest these are probably not as easy as you may think. For example, web hosting alone would require, if successful, servers (dedicated for maximum profit), support staff and "techies", advertising etc. - and that's not even taking into account the rest of the list.

I'm sure as a "businessperson", you'll understand it's impossible for somebody on a forum to give you very precise figures regarding costs at all. To give you an idea, to start, you'd need at least a dedicated server when starting up, not to mention database servers and maybe more, depending on the services you'll provide.

I have no idea who you approach about becoming a domain registrar, but think nominet would be a good place to start. I really think you need to do a bit more research here.

As for the server application, you'd need a website capable of all of the above. The hosting part alone would cost, around $200 (if outsourced), including design of the site and functionality. On top of that, post-research, you'd need an application capable of registering domains (this is a specialised area so $1-400) and of course the domain transfer, administration etc, I suppose like namecheap.com? To have similar features as namecheap.com, for example, you'd be looking at at least $1,000 of coding, bearing in mind security etc.

Add server fees, advertising and office space (bear in mind you will not be able to run the next namecheap.com from your bedroom), and it's a costly business, even when hiring programmers below minimum wage...

Hope that's given you an insight into the vast scale of the project you're taking on. If you're not a techie but an investor, you should probably pay somebody to do quite a bit of research

Good luck

Harvey had focus the light on topic pretty well. However, I think you should go through these articles that help you a lot.

ICANN is in charge of registering registrars. They charge a $10,000 minimum license (but could be more) last time I checked...and you have to have a business plan that they will approve. That is just for top level domain sales. The other services you mentioned are not included. you can find out more at
