I have 2 domain names which I want directing to 1 site.

I understand there are 2 options

1. DNS redirect (and its SEO impacts).
2. 301 redirect

I my case I have example.fr. This is the original site and where the pages are hosted. The owner has now bought just the name example.com and now wants this to direct users to example.fr.

Most of the info I have read seem to be for a situation where the old names needs pointing to the new. Mine seems to be the other way around.

Originally I thought I needed to do case 1 and change the DNS. I followed instructions on how to do this. However I now get an error of "Server not found"

Any clarification or guidance would be appreciated.

I think that for the SEO benefits better use 301 redirect on the server side

Thanks for the replies. I will try asking the registrar. If I have any more problems then I will come back.

I suppose 301 redirect would be more then enough for this kind of task
