Purpl3.com, or Appl3.com
would people looking for the words Orange, Purple, or Apple find my domain names easily through a search engine?
From what I understand, Google doesn't really give a lot of weight to a domain name for PR as does Yahoo
so I was wondering if people would see it listed and "get it"? or how a search engine would react to it.

Why?
It's nothing to do with SEO.
Marketing maybe but definitely NOT optimising

I was curious to know if search engines gave any extra weight to domain names?
For instance, if I was selling oranges and I chose the name: Orange.com
would that generate more results for me than if I chose a name like: PrettyLady.com
Why or Why not?
(that was basically behind the root of the question i was trying to ask, apologies for not wording myself this well originally)

Once upon a time the answer was yes. Today I'm not so sure, I'll say very very slightly, but others will say that any direct benefit from a keyword domain has flatout been stripped.
Keyword here being 'direct'. Indirectly, a keyword domain is a lot better than a non-keyword domain. Anytime your site is linked to in the form of www.domain.com, then the URL will contain your keywords, as opposed to a domain that doesn't. Also if third parties are going to link to your site using anchor text, there's a fair chance they'll use your domain name as well. If your keyword is your domain, then that's some good anchor text you'll be getting from every link back to your site.
So, directly, is there a benefit? Debatable, and in my opinion yes, but I could be wrong and others will say no. Is there an indirect benefit? Absolutely. If you're not interested in branding yourself, and it's a choice between orange.com or apple.com and you're selling oranges, then choosing orange.com will give you a lot more indirect benefits.
Hope this makes sense.

perfect sense and nothing I can add.
The only other slight advantage to a hostname that is sort of descriptive, is that it may take a little less work in branding. Which is really what these discussions should be about, not something as nebulous as SE results.

Right, and I never really gave much weight to chris' commentary on developing a name, over emphasis on SEO
because I thought he was trying to mislead all the newbies (myself, for one)
That is, with everyone's emphasis on SEO all over the web.
It wasn't until about 4 months later, fast-forward to present day: that I realized he wasn't misleading anyone about this.
It's as simple as he's saying: create a site with updated content that users want to keep coming back to- and there's your formula right there.
Also, mucho thanks to hubertthefly for opening my eyes to the indirect benefits of such a thing.

It sure has something to do with the rankings but focusing on the title and using that title in all of your backlinks is more effective.
Find Apple Products | mysite.com --------> Focus on backlinks with that exact keywords: Find Apple Products.

Why settle for one-word domain names? Here are some suggestions: FreshOrange.com, JuicyOrange.com, OrganicOrange.com, or PlumpOrange.com. Searchers' will expext more info about oranges from your website so be prepared with unique and regularly updated content.

Bring back weapon test videos. I almost felt like I could learn the art of fencing by watching Raphael show off his sweet moves - though it turned out I needed classes anyway, it was still cool to watch. Or maybe, I'm the only one that watched them. Either way, I'd like to see my custom characters showing off whatever weapon they happen to be wielding.
