Some webmasters said it's looks spammy having dashes in domain, but i think it is a good for SEO because it helps search engines accurately discern the keywords from the domain name.
Is it okay to register a domain with multiple dashes?

I think that the URL matters more to your users than anything else. Will they remember to type in a hyphen when visiting your site? Can you not get the unhyphenated version? If you could grab both, and market whichever one you prefer, that'd probably be the best way to go.

That would make sense if search engines didn't have a spell check that knows when you forget to hit space.

Put alexanderthegreat into Google and look at the results you get. I think you'll change your mind about dashes in a domain name and what effect it could possibly have for SEO.

Hey Pow-wow,

Dashes do not help with search engine placement. Also wesbites with dashes are harder for people to remember.

Best Regards,

i agree aswell, dashes are harder for people to remember and are more likely to leave them out. the hard thing is to find a generic name that is both is easily remembered and relates to your business name

I think you should avoid multiple dashes. It is hard to remember even one dash.

I have 8 websites and two of them have 4 hyphens in the domain name.
I'm ranking very high for competitive keywords in all the major search engines.

Check out How to make a website in my signature below.

I try to avoid dashes as best as possible, people care a lot about the domain name and can easily forget multiple dashes in the domain name. Yes it can look a bit messy too but mainly it's a hastle to type in or remember.

Would you mind PMing me those 4 website? From my experience and others ranking higher with hyphens is alot harder and almost impossible with competitive keywords. Perhaps im wrong though.

Best Regards,

It seems like it might good for SEO, but as far as type in traffic the dashes kind of diminish any chance of that. I personally would rather have a .net with no dashes than a .com with them.

But sometime people forgot to put dash when they search, and directly goes to your competitor without dash.

Think about the user. If you're tryng to do well in SERPs I think users are starting to stay away from sites that have to many dashes. Having the dashes might help you rank but it might not help you get any clicks.

I've heard a lot of mixed comments about hyphens and if they're good or bad for SEO.

Matt Cutts from Google has said that hyphens don't red flag a domain automatically.

Getting a domain flagged for review and having it deleted from the index probably has more to do with the content of the site rather than any hyphens in the domain.

The point is that there are advantages and disadvantages to hyphens. Hyphens do help to break up the keywords making shorter domains easier to remember. But too many hyphens add to the overall length and also make the domain look spammy.

I would try to avoid hyphens unless absolutely neccessary. If you have to use them only use 1-2 max. Always try to find another non hyphened domain if possible.

I have the domains name with/with-out dash.
I think it is easy to people to use the domain name with-out dash and easy to remember.

I prefer domains without the dashes and as far as hyphens helping SEO goes plenty of sites dont do too badly without them even if it did help.

hyphens might be good for SEO but at the end of the day, search engines arent going to visit your site. people are. people would find it hard to remember where the dashes go etc. this would end up losing you traffic.

I think the rule for hyphens is avoid them if possible. But if you have to use them try to keep it to 1 or 2 maximum.
