Just wondering. Is it legal to register cctdl's such as .fr .de ect. I'm new to domaining and have read that in order to regsiter a .fr domain you have to live in france. Is this true? is there a way around it. Is it worth the work? Where is the best place to register these domains? thanks in advance!

Each country has its own rules, but many of them have this kind of requirement. Here in Canada, for example, an individual registering a .ca domain must be a Canada citizen or a resident, and a company registering one must be registered in Canada. Some people have actually lost their domain because they tried to cheat the system -- mezzoblue.com/archives/2004/06/12/cira_ca_doma/

Besides .ca and .eu, I don't know of any other major TLDs that prevent outside registrations. What about .us, I'm not familiar with that extension at all?

I'd just stick with .com if you can. People are used to .com, and if you have a .fr, not many people will notice, and most will go to .com. Just a thought...

There is a way around which involves getting a contact from the country of residence e.g. .fr get a french person. About .de the domains are free for everyone to register--just needs a street address in Germany. you may Pm me for help if you need any. I hope that helps.

if you're going for a .fr, you best have a french audience. mortgage.fr isn't really good because hypotheque is the word for mortgage in French.
