Keep it Simple
If you're starting a site about investing, then a name like everythingyoueverwantedtoknowaboutinvesting.com is too **** long. What falls between the www. and the ending should never exceed 18 characters in length. Of course 8-10 is preferable. Since something like investing.com would be taken, think outside the box, like Investmentcircle.com. Its 16 characters long but memorable.
Don't Be Cute
Let's stay with the above example. Suppose you wanted to buy out the domain investmentcircle.com and its take, do not take something like investmentcirkle.com. Its forgettable, and worse yet, unprofessional.
Domain Endings
Be sensable. If you're running an investment site, don't buy a .tv or .xxx ending. And don't buy national endings like .org.il or .co.uk. Whenever possible, avoid a .info domain, since very few respectable websites use it. .com is ideal, but .net is fine. .org is gaining acceptance, but its still the ugly duckling of the big three.
Typos
Don't be stupid. Make sure to check for typos before you hit the submit button. Spelling errors spell doom for your site. And don't EVER intentionally buy a mispelled domain. Don't try and buy a rip-off of a major site, with a spelling error or alternate ending. Past court cases show that you'll get sued and lose.
Word Choice
Don't use foul words. Unless your website is about the definition of such a word, don't buy domains with cuss words in it. If you hate investing, don't buy a domain like ****investing.com. Get something more professional like evilsofinvesting.com. And use keywords if you can. For example, if you're making a porn site, a keyword like hardcore or lesbian incorperated into the URL wil help your PR and your traffic. Don't use numbers unless essential.
