I have noticed when looking at websites that the unique names that really don't make any sense sell a lot better than most regular worded domain names. I don't know what it could be, well actually I have an incling on how it works.

Business's like unique things. That is a fact. Most business's you see have unique names. You can have a name like Redtrumpet Inc, and if the business takes off, the name wouldn't matter much.

It is like domain appraisals in a way. When people ask for appraisals on these weird names, you think to yourself. "Who is going to type this in?" Well in fact, any domain that is developed and maintained properly can sell, and will be popular.

One time take a look a some business names. Most of them are unique domain names, and even though they look weird, they sell very well.

Hope this helps,

Jason F.

I still go for the real word approach. I have a website launching soon. I'll give you the domain once I register it, but it uses real words, while still being unique.

I was actually thinking of taking the unique name approach for RealDN, but I decided to take real a high used keyword, and DN, a much used forum name for domain names, and put them together. It is pretty catchy.

That's why you develop the harder names. Trust me, they mean a lot when they are developed. People will remember any name if it is worth going too.

I say its a 50-50 split.
Some will remember a unique name.....some will remember a name they are familiar with.

If you look on any search engine, and type in weird names.. Some of them have a lot of links, and if you really look at it, the directories are filled with them as well. So if you see a name for a long time, and it looks popular, than you're definitely going to go to it.

Yeah - no matter what the name is - if you keep ending up there and see it regularly you will remember it.

If a client is looking for a new domain and nothing they like is available, I normally advise them to get a 2-word domain where one word is related to the content of their site, while the other word can be anything.

Example:

OctopusDesigns.com

Unique names work. People remember the odd names, because they are odd. When I see an odd named movie and enjoy it, I remember that movie forever, while if I see a movie that isn't so odd and it is terrible, I don't remember one part of it. Development works on any domain, believe me. You'd be surprised.

I think it depends on what your site is about and how well it is developed. Say im looking for a design company on google, im going to go with the no 1/2/3/4/5 spot companies, im not going to go to like number 20 just because it has octopus designs.

Hey, im new here. I was directed to this site through JJ's Myspace profile. This is a very interesting topic. Personally I believe the name is the first thing that can sell a potential customer.

Here are some ideas ive worked up that help generate traffic.
1. The name must be something a person can remember.
2. The name cant be overly complicated.
3. Unless your a big name star, dont use your name for your site URL.
4. People like to find information fast, having a name that informs them of your services will save time for viewers allowing them to find what they need faster. This ofcourse goes right into the site design and layout itself but this isnt the topic for me to discuss that.
5. Using double letters will confuse people. Its best to steer away from two or more word names where the last letter of one word, is the same as the first letter in the following word. Example: www.danssoftware.com

I used to run a website called ShadowGrafx. This wasnt a very successful design site considering it was my first. I dropped that in hope of finding a new host which can provide better services (more space and bandwidth at a better price). I am now working on putting out my new website 12oneMedia. I still havent found a host I like but im still looking.

The name 12oneMedia, although seemingly random, is infact the result of a process of thought. I was driving one day while trying to think of a new name for the new site. I was having a bit of a hard time, then I remembered that inspiration can be found anywhere. At a stop light I started looking around my surroundings to try and tap into a source which would help me produce an effective name. I then saw building with the address 1211. I thought to myself, 1211... 121... 12one... 12one Designs.... 12one Media. I immediatly stopped myself at 12oneMedia and decided this is what I will call my new site.

As you can see, if you cant at first think of a name, look at around. Go for a drive/walk/run/bike ride. Whatever you do, do something. While your doing it, look around you (at appropriate moments ofcourse) and try to find something to inspire you.

This is a very good post. I really truly believe this could help in looking for a unique name. In fact something that does inspire you would grow pretty fast if you wanted too. That is why I think they are good if you develop them. Pretty much any name would be great if you develop it.
