Hi, how can I have 2-3 domain names for one website? How does having multiple domain names effect searches done in Google?

Thanks,
Nathan

You can have multiple domains for a single website quite easily. There are two main ways of doing it:
  • Redirect all domains to a single 'main' domain
  • Alias the domains, so each shows the same content/site

The redirect would typically be best (to my knowledge) as a 301. In search engine terms this would forward any "search engine goodness" to the new url (e.g. the 'main' domain).

I believe that search engines would treat the aliased domains as duplicate content (since you'd have say 3 domains, all with exactly the same content!). So in this case you wouldn't see any particular disadvantage, but probably only one of them would be listed in Google.

Redirect 301 is a very helpful thing in this case.

For a 301 redirect you need to host the domain somewhere, and then create something to perform the redirect.

This could be a .htaccess, or you can do it via scripting (e.g. PHP).

What do you have available in terms of hosting and scripting technologies? If you can answer that then I'm sure someone can provide you with more specific guidance on how to proceed.

"What's your budget?" - Not much. I have hosting with Godaddy with full scripting support.
