Hello,

I changed my site's domain name 2 years ago and parked the old one due to the number of external links to it. Currently it is forwarding to the new name. How do I implement a 301 htaccess, as I understand this would be permanent and search engines would then update the links or ..... ????

If I have to un-park the domain then I'd be paying more? For how long would I need to keep it up?

Thanks kindly,
Richie

Richie depending on how it's parked now it might already be set up as a 301 redirect. Some hosting control panels will set up the .htaccess file when you park the domain. If you want to post both domains I can have a look and let you know.

Here's an article on how to apply 301 redirects for a variety of cases.

How long you need to keep the 301 redirects depends. Always if you want to keep the links pointing to the new site forever.

It only matters whether the server is Apache or Windows, but since the question was specifically about .htaccess it's an Apache question.

Ho Richie,

With http watcher you can see the http status code.
As vangogh said, maybe you it's already 301.

Alex do you use Firefox? There are some extension that allow you to see all the header information when you visit a page. I use Live HTTP Headers, but there are others.

I've never used http watcher. Is it a stand alone application or a browser add on?

Hi,

I work on my website <link removed> and check that it works fine in both browsers.

HTTP watcher is a browser add on. There is a nice free http watcher - http://www.httpwatch.com/download (for IE6 & 7).
