i am having a tough time trying to determine where the horizontal line

The middle line running through:

Item one | Item two | Item three | Item four | Item five

http://css.maxdesign.com.au/listamat...izontal19.htm#

any ideas?

If you looked at the source and the css you'd figure it out:

#navcontainer {

border-top:1px solid #999999;
margin-bottom:40px;
margin-left:auto;
margin-right:auto;
z-index:1;

Thanks anyway - but I did that and it didn't work (I'm not that dumb). I've been playing with it for over an hour.

It was why I resorted to posting to the forum...

Did you notice the positioning of the #navcontainer ? The top of it goes under the middle of the boxes holding the nav. If it isn't working for you, then perhaps you have something else in your code that is different from the source.

I think you should apologize, really. I have just checked with FF,

#navcontainer
{
margin-left: auto;
margin-right: auto;
margin-bottom: 40px;
border-top: 1px solid #999; /* remove this line */
z-index: 1;
}

Where's the page where you tried it? It may be easier if we saw it.
