alternative to I-frames?

I've searched threads and can find no help or even similar queries:
My site mainly shows portfolios of several tattoo artist's (10). On each artist's page, I have a group of thumbnails (21) that open enlargements in an I-frame. Each image is actually an html page. Thats about 200 pages.
To reduce the amount of pages involved, I tried having the i-frames call up jpgs instead. Each image is a different size. I can't find any way to center the jpg images within the i-frame.

Can this be done using css or is there another way to display portfolios with thumbnails that doesn't require i-frames?
One stipulation: I'd like the thumbnails ever-present so they can be selected without backing up.

See stingertattoo.com (Artists' section)

Thanks in advance,
Zeppo

Thanks chrishirst
I am actually using lightbox slideshow on the homepage under 'news bulletin - new tattoos' but once slideshow is open (and you can toggle through all the related images) you must close it before accessing active thumbnail links again (in order to view just a select few images).

I'm looking in to doing away with I-frames and tables altogether and just centering Enlargements between the Artist Bio and the Thumbnails.
