Ive place a couple adsense link units in a good spot on my site recently. I don't have enough traffic yet to tell if they are effective or not but to me they don't seem that appealing. It would be easy for someone to click on the unit but then it takes you to another page with ads displayed. I figure even your average user would click the back button because they know it is an advertisement, thus no $.

Has anyone here noticed good results from a link unit? I really am not losing anything by putting them on my page because it allows you to have more than 3 adsense units on a page, but I dunno if they are as effective as normal adsense ad units.

If you want to see mine my homepage is http://www.starcrafted.org, if you are using IE or anything besides firefox it may look a bit distorted since I haven't fixed it for other browsers yet. You can see that the link units are at the top of the page where it would be logical to think it is my site's actual navigation.

They don't do to well, I recommend 250x300, Leaderboards and Skyscrapers. Left-hand preferable or left-oriented to your content.

I've used a few link units, but they haven't done too well.
Here's a link to an official Google adsense blog that suggests how to make some of your adsense targetable. I am trying this - not long enough to know how it's doing yet. Here's the link and then I'll paste an interesting excerpt below the link:
http://adsense.blogspot.com/2008/10/...sing-your.html
" .....Third, use the 300x250 medium rectangle, opted in to both text and image ads. This is one type of targetable ad unit that's in high demand by Google's CPM advertisers. We recommend placing these units in line with your content, and describing them as they relate to the content. This combination of format and placement enables advertisers to use image, text, or rich media (including gadget ads) effectively......"

It's true that regular ads will probably earn you more money, I have had success with link ads. I usually place them near my site navigation bar so they blend in better. While the CTR is lower, the earnings per click is usually higher than with my regular ads
