I don't have enough traffic for IntelliTXT but I could probably get accepted into a similar program but do these highlighted word things work well in forums?

Do they get many clicks? Or does it just annoy the users??...

It's just that i've never really seen it used in a forum...

Allow users to turn it off in their UserCP and they should be fine with it.

Dunno about easy to get into but there's :
linkworth.com - who have LinkWords now (easy to sign up for, just did it)
kontera.com - i THINK they do the same thing
ontok.com - annoying popup that doesn't seem to auto-close...

Might try LinkWorth... need to look at their requirements first though I suppose

Now that's an interesting idea!

Have you seen a mod like that for vBulletin?

Not sure if there is one but according to their site you need to put in specially marked <div> tags around the text you want to contextualise links into AND put a small javascript at the end of the page. I reckon it'd be possible for a vB shark to create a mod that turns on/off the <div> tags and the script at the end... ???

Not sure what it takes, but it took our programmer a few minutes to add it. He's a bit of a vB shark, though.

To me, running forums is totally different from running a static site. My members are my customers. If they are happy, they will come back for more. Honestly, the members who are going to take the time to go into their UserCP (after they figure out they can do it - it's not exactly plastered everywhere) are the same people who *don't click ads*. They are the people who come to the site multiple times per day - refreshing for new posts, etc. Why bother them with annoying stuff like in-text ads if they aren't even going to respond to them? (We have a techie crowd, so that is part of it too - they are mostly very savvy.)

I am pretty sure that IntelliTXT is the hardest to get into, though I am not sure what the reqs. are (they called us). We have been testing with Kontera for the past few weeks and we are starting a test with IntelliTXT on Monday. They operate a bit differently in that with Kontera, a pageview is counted if a page loads with at least one link replacement. IntelliTXT, on the other hand, requires a mouseover of an ad to be counted as a pageview. But of course, that is offset by the rates the offer - IntelliTXT offered us mid $XX.XX CPM and Kontera offered us mid $X.XX CPM (net to us).

Once we are done testing, I will do a write up on our specfic experiences.

I've used both Kontera and IntelliTXT. Which is better appears to depend upon what kind of deal you can negotiate.

I've got my AdSense turned off for all logged-in forum members. I'll have to look into how to add something to the User Control Panel and how to have that interact with the templates.

Yes, this is one thing that I totally agree with. When I hesitated, both companies upped their offers several times. They are more than willing to negotiate.

I just wish AdSense would do that with me.
