It is best to take fresh contents instead of copying, because the ideas you can give nobody else has similar to it. So, dont waste this asset and show your uniqueness by writing new contents.

Having these so-called free content taken from other websites will not help towards search engine ranking. It will just be flagged as having duplicate content

It's unethical to use another website's content, even if you paraphrase it the owner of the website would still know you lifted it from his work.

There are a lot of websites that offer free content like ezine articles etc ,just do a google search .I would suggest you make changes to the content before you put it up on your website because of duplicate content and google will not pull you up on their searches.

You can't have direct penalty for getting other site's contents but your site won't get that high ranks for those keywords.
