My question is this...Is it legal to post material from news sites ans such if you give them full credit for the article. If it is, what would be the proper way to give credit when using others material...Thanks for helping...Tim

It depends on the country you live in, but assuming the US, you might want to start by looking at http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html

While I am not a lawyer and never offer legal advice, I usually operate under the principle that if I were offended by the behavior, it's likely someone else will be too, so I stick to summaries, citations, quotes, etc. A simple link back to the site suffices or a citations page are good ways of citing sources.

Tell your reader above the article on where you get the article posted on your site.

If you know the author, you might want to mention him or her.. Also, add the website from which you took the article.. Crediting is important most especially when you have copied the entire news article..

Simply put, it's not legal to post the entire article without permission. It doesn't matter if you give credit. Regardless of country.

It's also not ethical.

There is a bit of a gray area regarding RSS feeds. Generally the consensus is, if someone publishes an RSS feed, then you can display the content of the feed (unaltered) but, this may still be restricted legally.

Yes, it's completely legal. Make sure you post news link below the article.

Show it as source or read more and link it with news link.

No, it's not legal if you do not have permission.

Hi, most authors will put something on their site saying whether or not you can copy their content. Of course you can't alter it in anyway and you must provide a link back to where you go it.

why not wrangle/autorewrite the first few paragraphs to create your own interpretation and then link to the main article. i do this with movie reviews and works a treat.

Willcode4beer is correct, it is not legal. You have to obtain permission from the original source. Otherwise, it's a violation of copyright laws.

I have worked with lawyers at publishing companies. They go after people for copyright violations all the time.

Rewriting is a litte safer, but you need to make sure your version is a lot different from the original source, don't use any quoted material, and get a second source if possible.

Usually you need to contact authors of the articles. In most cases it will be classified as stealing. Even rewriting may not help since lawyers of serious and established news sources are usually good enough.

Do you need it for "legal" publications or simply need some changing content for you website regardless of the source? In the second case it may be useful to translate some foreign news line.
