If you had to choose which is best for some original content, which would you choose and why?
a. Posting it on your own website or blog and no where else
b. Submitting to article directories and the like
c. Both?
Thanks!

Not sure i understand why you are asking the question. Because if it is truly original why would you give it away to sites that it will be found on sooner that it will on your own site?
If it is original keep the value to yourself. The vast majority of "article directories" exist purely to earn advertising clicks from YOUR work.
And, to nobody in particular, but you know who you are:
PLEASE, don't tell me "it's a backlink" because these sites don't exist to give you a backlink and they certainly don't exist for the philanthropic reasons of sharing the information.

Thanks Chris. I'm fairly new is why I'm asking. I've written some of my own original content articles, but it seems like the majority of the advice I've
seen/read about advocates to submit my articles to directories for the website traffic it produces. Definitely going to change tactics there.

I'll choose to put it in my website and blog. It will be more helpful rather that submitting it to different article directories.

You've heard a lot of bad advice from people who pretend to know what they're doing. That's no fault of your own, the interwebs are full of them. And it sounds like you're on the right track to profit yourself instead of strangers on the internet, who might have a vested interest in having people think article "marketing" ( aka donation) is somehow going to help you.

I think it depends on your goals. I like article marketing because I get to expose my website to new audiences. Tracking also tells me that I do make sales from submitting article to directories.
Ok, so you've posted the original articles on your site. How are you to promote your site other than the obvious paid methods?
Also, would you consider submitting your article to social bookmarking sites like Digg as "charity" as well?
thanks

I think you'd be better of writing some decent content and posting it on your blog. It depends on what you're trying to achieve, but establishing a reputation in your niche as as expert is a good start. Then you can get back links to yourself anyway.

If you've measured the results of this and its opposite, and come out better this way, then, more power to you.

There are many choices available - which one( s) you decide on depend on the specifics.

If Digg profits from your labor without compensating you for it, then yes, I would. If you get back more than the value of your labor plus the opportunity cost of no longer having exclusive rights to your work, then, no, you've come out ahead.

I'd split my efforts in two ways by writing unique articles specifically for a website / blog and writing unique articles specifically for the directories.
Testing is the key here. Everyone will tell you they've had a different experience, so your best bet is to test. See which method brings in more traffic / sales and go with it.
The benefit here is that by the end of the day, you'll have tons of unique content written about you / your business. There's no losing in that scenario.

Post the original website on your blog and change the content a little bit to post it on other sites!

Just in case you haven't heard the answer yet or you want as many opinions as possible, Post your content on your own site.
If it is in fact different from everything out there, the spiders will find it.
The advice to rewrite a watered down version and submit it to the article mills is also good advice.

I'd agree with the suggestion that testing and determining what works best for you and helps you attain your goals is the best way to go.
Try both approaches and see what works. Perhaps you can even mix and match and use both approaches at different times. TEST TEST TEST!

if you only have one piece of content then your site should take preference.
its worth nothing our system (see link below) allows you to take content and in 10 seconds create numerous unique versions, so with this said you can have the best of both worlds - blog/site content/post and article submission.

What do you suggest to post on article sites there? Link building is still important so give me some suggestions of what should be put there?

Use the original content on your own site as you want your content to be fresh, unique and original.
Submitting to article directories will help you to gain backlinks, so what you can do is do a some rewriting to your original content so that the content on your site is still unique and if different websites pick up the article, theirs will be 'duplicated' content, as all these website are using the content which you post to the directories and yet you get the backlinks.

You might try doing articles that link topically back to your original content, as reviews or other stuff.
