People LOVE to Buy, but HATE to be Sold.

Rejection words are words that raise a "RED FLAG" to your prospect that you are trying to "Sell Them!"

It is better to replace these redflag words with softer less intimidating words that will engage your prospect rather than run them away...

Here's are a list of rejection words that come to mind at this moment. I have listed some replacement suggestions along with them as better options to consider. Fell free to add to/expand this list.

Reject: Buy this...
Replacement: Own this..

Reject: Pay for/purchase..
Replacement: Secure/reserve your copy...

Reject: Your price/cost is...
Replacement: Your investment is...

Reject: I can sell you a...
Replacement: I can help you get a...

Get the idea?

These are just a few rejection words/ replacement options. Feel free to contribute to this thread by listing some rejection words & replacement options of your own. Or by expanding on the previous list. Let's all become better copywriters by engaging our prospects through "soft selling" proving that we are there to help them -- instead of hitting them across the head with a sales pitch that makes them feel like we're just out to Get Their Money!

I get your point. Hard sell only works in home TV shopping I think. haha! But yeah the effective way of selling is always emphasizing on what they're going to get from your service rather than shoving your product down their throats.

I'll post some "reject words" when I get to think of some.

Excellent post! I've been researching copywriting for a while now, hoping to get my feet wet. I enjoy writing but copywriting specifically has always been that elusive unicorn to me. I know I can do it, I'm just a little scared to jump in and start swimming. Any tips?

By the way, what about replacing cliche words and phrases as well? For example, whenever I hear the phrase "limited time offer" I turn off the TV or disconnect from the internet. It's so overused I automatically assume I'm not getting a good deal. Would "time-sensitive offer" be better? What about replacements for the following cliches?

"...to lock in this price..."
"...free bonus offer..."
"...order/call now..."

Any other suggestions?

I believe Time-Sensitive-Offer is a good one because it's not over-used. I've been making a practice of using this replacement in my content.

"...to lock in this price" mmm let's see...a few options are:

-- "...to take advantage of this price" or...
-- "...to guarantee this price"
-- "...to secure this price..."
-- "...to freeze this price..."

"...free bonus offer..."

Replacement Options:

"...Complimentary Bonus"
"...Bonus Gift valued at (insert value) provided to you at Zero cost.
"...Priceless/Free Bonus Opportunity..."

"...order/call now..."

Replacement Options:

"...Own it Now"
"...Act Now..."
"...Secure/reserve yours Now..."
"...Contact us Now..."

Just a few replacement options to consider. Hope this helps!

Why is it the "time sensitive offers" really just mean, the price is this "high" for a limited time?
3 months later, the same product will be at wally world for half the price.

Yes, and I don't think it's a very useful one at all.

When somebody tells me to "reserve my copy" I want to tell them where they can stick my copy. People don't hear a stream of unrelated, unconnected words, and become angry when a person says a particular word. Those words have meaning - they're communicating something. It isn't the word "buy" that turns people off - it's being sold a bill of goods they don't want to be sold. You're still trying to communicate that message, and it's the message, not how you deliver it, that people reject.

You all have valid points. And the truth is that people are all different that's for sure. Some may agree with one approach - others may not. One thing for sure is that people will buy what they want to buy especially over the web. I still believe that having copy blatantly say BUY NOW, BUY NOW, BUY NOW is obvious to many people that someone is just trying to sell them something obviously - I did not say all think this -- but many do. If you prefer those more obvious words then by all means use them. But substituting those words with softer words just may reap better conversion rates for many of your products/services. The truth is the choice of words - your delivery - can make all the difference in the world to many people and may not make a difference at all to some. All I can say is don't knock it until you try it/test it. The numbers don't lie.

It's not hard to start a writing business at all. It's no different from talking to a friend that you're giving advice to. Just don't think about it too much, let it flow~~ And Write to Communicate e-ffectively!

Yes. Writing articles is not only telling the world what you have in mind but it's also a money maker now. My skills in article writing only came out when I was already full of problems. When I started writing down the details of it, I was really relieved. And it's a good business too-frankly speaking.

What a very good way to accept rejection.. at least it doesn't hurt that much... It's like being cool in a very hot summer day.
