I think it will be better if the length of your post is above 300 words.. So if you want to submit that post to several article directories, then it will be approved and published.. That's because some article directories do not accept an article with less than 300 words...

I like the girl's skirt reference.

Anyway, most people don't read insanely long blog posts. That's because the nature of blog posts are supposed to be conversational. If you're having a conversation with a person you wouldn't want to just hang around there while the other person talks for fifteen minutes straight, right? This is based on experience by the way. Most bloggers write about opinion on news, gadget reviews and maybe some newfound information but they wouldn't ramble on it for around 8 paragraphs. Well, at least I wouldn't.

Now the same cannot be said about articles. Since articles are good sources of information, and people who read articles are looking for information, short articles would give the impression that the article isn't all that helpful. So if you're making an article, it is advisable to put all the essentials in.

The reason why articles tend to be longer is that you have to make sure your content is long enough to discuss your topic effectively. And fully discussing a topic would normally take more than 300 words, right?

If its for SEO etc then between 450-600 words is the amount that should be used. If other sites are going to publish them this length is long enough for an informative article but not too long as well.

300-500 words per page/post seems to work best for me. i do however, agree that it really depends on the audience you are trying to reach and purpose of the site/blog
