My site is climbing to the top of google under it's keyword search term.

It was at position 14 a while ago, then 8, now 7. It's a content site with 5 articles, should I start adding more? Would it help? Would it change the rankings?

Remember this one phrase: "Content is king."

You can't go wrong with adding more content unless you deviate from the topic of your website.

Don't write about oranges if your site is all about apples

you are right there. I'm getting more unique content as we speak, and I'm also going to get a better site design!

I'll then focus on getting plenty of backlinks and directory submissions.

Deviation = dilution = lower serps

Obviously staying on topic within your site will grow your niche audience provided they get fresh content, otherwise the 5 articles will lose their appeal to visitors after they have read them all.

Link building is a continuous process as well and normally only pays dividends in the longterm growth of the site... although a good inbound link from an authority site will give good PR weight and indexing appeal to your site.

Ganceann, my site is new and I didnt start adding articles until about 11 days ago. I am going to add an article every 6 or 7 days. Is that about right or perhaps more often?

Yes, I need to do much more toward establishing links. It is important though a longterm proposition.

Thanks,

Mark

You could also write articles about related topics that have different keywords. Then you could focus on those keywords on the pages and show up for more keywords in google.

The more frequently you add content, the more frequently visitors will hit your site.

One thing to remember (and please do remember)...

The more content you add, the more organised your site has to be. Nobody wants to go onto a website that's navigated horribly and isn't cohesive.

One article a week to your site and one article a week to article directories would really keep you on the first page of Google.

You mention that your "site" is climbing well on Google but presumably there
will be one particular page on your site that's ranking well (if all your pages
are optimised for exactly the same keyword then you're throwing away an
opportunity to spread your net. Remember, Google ranks pages not sites).

If a particular page is ranking well for this keyword that you mention then
adding a new article page focussed on the same keyword won't harm the
one that's already there. Google will focus on the page that ranks best for
that keyword so if your new page is better then it'll rank higher than your
current one, if it isn't better then your current page will remain the best
performer for that keyword.

However, if you already have a page in the top 7 for that keyword then I
personally think that you'd be better off targetting your new pages on other
keywords. Don't do anything to mess with the one that's already doing well,
but add new pages that can dominate their own keyword rankings. Spread
your net a bit.

Best Regards
