Hi,

Obviously as I am asking the question, I am currently looking at writing articles for my article site. However, I am inexperienced in approaching this, and I do not want to populate the original formation articles as all republished work.

Currently I have written all the articles on my site (under 3 names as I was trying to decide which to use, a penname, an alternative author or as myself). However, my expertise does not extend to every subject that I have included and as such I am not sure how best to approach each of the remaining subcategories that require articles.

Ideally I would have all the articles with some value in the information, although not all will bring anything new or enlightening. I guess I am asking, in terms of research, what areas should I be looking at for the subcategories - are there any people here who could give me some pointers in terms of interesting areas for research, that I could look into and explore to produce reasonable quality content.

Thanks.

I have to ask: why are you writing about information you don't know or feel comfortable discussing?

Basically I will not be writing about every category when the site gets going, however, I would much prefer if I had at least one article in each sub category as this would be more appealing than having all sub-categories empty. (both in terms of search engines and general inquisitive visitors).

Also each category can extend beyond the knowledge even for an expert in that area due to the amount of material available...

Category: Home
Sub-cat: Home Improvement

Now if I was a flooring specialist I would be able to write many great articles on flooring, however, I may not be an expert on painting, tiling, building a patio etc.

Now all of them categories fall under the general sub-category of home improvement (or they can do). Is it right that I remove home improvement category because I dont know any other DIY apart from flooring?

If you understand what I mean... I am trying to look at areas within the subcategories that will primarily be starting points to the subcategory rather than just a generic copy/pasted or republished article from another directory.

Ganceann, I understand what you are saying. The guys over at 37Signals -- if you ever read them -- would tell you to start small, and don't overbuild your site.

Even if it means only starting out with categories/subcategories that you have content for, better to have a great, smaller site than an overbuilt, lacking site.

Hope that helps some.

Yes I know what your saying, and I already admitted on another thread that I had started with too many subcategories (I did trim some down). I am planning to use this more as a test-bed to determine where I can specialise in as I gain more experience...

I guess I am doing it from the wrong side of the funnel ... instead of starting at the narrow side and working outwards, I started at the wide area and working backwards.

So if it's your first step and you're trying to gain experience, then what you are doing now is great. Getting feedback and learning from others can only help you out.

Best of luck!
