I agree a bit with the OP. I'd say the phrase "unique content" is over used a lot - people ask questions about how to get traffic and the instant response is usually unique content this, unique content that and so on...its become a bit of a buzz word really.
I dont think unique is the issue anyway - its the quality thats important in my mind. How many websites on the net have totally unique content? Ok so the actual written material might be unique but the subject matter and news stories and stuff will be very unlikely to be totally unique.
You can have totally unique content but it can be really short and utter crap, or you can write quality material about the same stuff loads of other people have written about, but make it interesting and decent. Which gets more traffic and links etc? Pretty obvious I think.
Anyway - Digg and Slashdot seem to be doing pretty well for themselves with zero unique content.
