While I do have a few niche sites that rely on submitted articles and the like, almost everything I write tends to be 'unique content'. Of course you can be pedantic and quibble over the definition, but generally I view it as writing a few pages about something you know and understand in such a manner that it is both readable and understandable by the target audience.
Personally I also considering recompiling data from several sources into a new and more lucid article 'unique content'. This is, of course, a world apart from the copy and paste world of copyright violations and plagiarism, hmmm.
Addenda: As for the worth of unique content - well D'oh! I've seen my hits jump by 30-50,000 in a month from a few well written, topical articles. Not bad for a little typing, hmmm.
