A couple of days ago YouTube got sued for copyright violation by Robert Tur.

Mr. Tur sued because the video of the attack on trucker Reginald Denny during the 1992 Los Angeles riots, O.J. Simpson's 1994 freeway chase video was on YouTube without his permission.

Here is a part of YouTube's statement
Quote:
Upon receiving notice of the complaint, we removed all of the plaintiff's video clips that we were able to locate. Mr. Tur never contacted YouTube to request the removal of his video clips. Instead, Mr. Tur chose to file a federal lawsuit asking a court to order the same removal.
Tur's attorney, Francis Pizzulli, was quoted

we have not heard any official response from them [ YouTube]

Copyright protection is getting more and more difficult (and interesting).

Yeah it is. The amount of music videos and movie clips on these sorts of websites, which people who are making money from is phenominal.

I know a guy who created a website which had hundreds and hundreds of singles and albums on it, because he wasn't making any money from the site it was legal; however if he were to make money from the site it would be illegal.

There needs to be an alliance set up between sites like youtube and the entertainment industry. This is where it's going really, these things just take so much **** time.

Apple has opened some doors by convincing corps to put music, albums and episodes on itunes. This works great for stuff that people would pay real money for, but what about all the things that aren't worth a dollar? If one of these video sites had some sort of revenue sharing system (similar to what revver is starting), then corps could make money off of all their archives and archives of **** that wouldn't sell otherwise. There's so many generations of "viral" videos stored away out there it's ridiculous.

anyways, this isn't the first time the tube has got some flack for copyright violation, but they're always compliant and pull through.

Not everyone belongs to the "entertainment industry", clearly Mr. Tur does not. How would you get his "buy-in" to follow whatever "sites like YouTube" and the "entertainment industry" agreed to? How would you get "sites like YouTube" do the buy-in?

IsMaR, how is YouTube like Wikipedia?

If you don't want to call it the "entertainment industry", then simply call it "media". Mr. Tur is a television journalist. He works in media.

I'm not sure exactly what your rebuttal is saying, Libertate, but you have to agree that the "entertainment industry" and "mass media" fall under very similar categories in this case. Broadcasts like Tur's could and would work in an ad sponsored "site like YouTube".

I wanted to make sure we do not mistaken Mr. Tur for someone of RIAA, MPAA or a Hollywood media darling entertainment.

I wasn't rebutting anyting. I simply wanted clarification how such agreement would be achieved.

Not suprised at all to see someone putting a lawsuit on youtube. I have been sent links to much content from that site, and was a little suprised that they had some of the videos that they did.
