What do you mean by "alternative" ?
Your only alternative for having xp sp2 is for having xp without sp2.

A service pack is a bulk of security updates for a ms product, nothing else.
It's not a program, or a suite.

Now, if you talk about security updates, or firewall, maybe you can still install them apart sp2, and install another firewall (which I recommend strongly anyhow...)

You could try programs like autopatcher [ http://www.autopatcher.com/whatsautopatcher/ ] and winDizUpdate [ http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/ ].
I've tried last week an freeware that allowed me to download hotfixes and services packs, without windows update, but I'v deleted it in the mean time, and I don't remember it's name, nor where I found it....
But I keep searching

I can go without it. wouldn't disturb me at all.

But this driver won't install CPU Driver Ver.1.3.1.0.zip

And I have this lousy PCI device that calls for a driver but it won't find it or in stall.

I'm thinking there has to be an older version of this cpu driver.

What the *** is a cpu driver ????

Edit:
Ok, I've done a bit of researches and found that this driver can reduce cpu usage in some cases.
But do you really need it ?

And what is the pci device ?
Name, maker, id strings...

I think I do. It also helps control multi processors. And I'm in that position.

And what is the pci device ?
Name, maker, id strings...
Device type SCSI and RAID controllers
Manufacture: Unknown
PCI Slot 3 (PCI bus 6, device 4, function 2)

After that...
No clue !

Michel, Try this:

1) Open the system properties tab by pressing the key win + pause/break
2) Hardware tab, open the device manager
3) Select the non-working pci device and open it's properties
4) Go on details tab
5) Give me back the string displayed there. There is a vendor Id and product Id I can back trace to find the drivers

The drivers for this device are not installed. (code 28)
To reinstall the drivers for this device click. Reinstall Driver.

----------

It is WIFI...
So all I need is a generic wifi driver !!!

But on that note....
I can't install 98% of my stuff without SP2.

I got to figure a way around this.
