I personally use AVG Free for all of my home computers as well as my clients, I really like it and would recommend it to anyone, you can download it from http://www.filehippo.com
You can also download it from AVG's site but they have it hidden away because they want you to try the professional version.
Free decent choices: AVG or Avast.
But don't expect a lot of them.
I can see great results from NOD32, the one i've been using since around a year, and works really good, pretty fast, and powerful so.
OK, you get what you pay for. So don't count on much from any free software. When they become viable as a REAL solution they begin to charge... I would pay annually.
I have used all free AV but not found one I really liked. But then again, no one can provide the FULL coverage. You need multiple solutions.
Check out this site for any information on AV -http://www.virusbtn.com this is a link EVERYONE needs to have. It is a MONTHLY review of all relevant virus programs and how they stack up. Each month it is different as some will leap ahead of others then fall back again. So get an annual tally of the software's performance.
Why does no one like Norton? I've used it for a long time and not had any problems. I bought Kaspersky and had nothing but problems so I went back to Norton.
I don't want to get into the argument of which Antivirus is the most efficient memory wise etc but I have been using Norton for quite some time, in fact about 6 years to be exact and have no complains whatsover.

norton really makes comp too slow during scanning time specially
I am currently using AVG, and this is good. AVG also makes slow to computer while scanning. But I've used avast and I found it best for me. I'll suggest you to use avast.
The thread is quite long and old so I believe he have tested all of the existing ones
