There was no IE Browser before 1995, it was Netscape and some others. Mozilla was the backbone of Netscape, actually it was Mozilla's browser but was contracted from Netscape to make their browser, bundled with the email client along with Netscape composer, which I still use. Not for making webpages though. Netscape was the big shot for browsing for that time.

Because it has become a habit. If change with firefox, I will feel very uncomfortable.

Most of my friends who work in offices use IE.
I think most work places use IE and a lot of people surf the net at work
So it is still important to make sure you make websites that work in IE.

But I assume thats why the figures are so high, Offices and noobs use it.

unfortunately lots still use IE. Especially in the corporate world. Even ie6!

Basically anyone who "doesn't know better" still uses default programs -
and IE is a default browser
just like McAfee and Norton are default "virus protection" (if you can call it that)
(IE, McAfee and Norton are highly susceptible to be the target of a malicious attack because of popularity and because the user's "just don't know any better")

Schools and Offices use defaults specifically because they don't want anything being downloaded onto the computer that isn't going to be used to learn or for work. At my last job that involved computer use, I upgraded all the software, switched everyone to Firefox, got rid of the crap they were using and added what I use to protect my computer (I became the IT girl for free, but I just worked at the Front Desk filing paperwork)... needless to say it took me a lot of convincing to be able to even do that. The Aquatics Director blamed Firefox for the virus's she had on her computer. Of course, it couldn't POSSIBLY be the fact that she wrote her password on a sticky in her desk drawer and the lifeguards went into her unlocked office to watch porn when she wasn't there... nooooo couldn't possibly be the reason -.-

I use Google chrome. I think it is the best browser as comparison to others because it is very much stable and reliable browser. It uses less memory than other browsers.

i didnt use IE anymore, it load slower, i switched to chrome.. 10X speed

Netscape and before that / around that time, also "Mosaic" - not so much a browser as a mess on your screen that displeased the eye almost perfectly!!!

I'm on chrome these days. There is one small flaw. Because new tabs open up nearest the left rather than at the end, you can accidentally close a tab in the middle of some bastard of a long download, when still getting used to it, and perhaps out of carelessness at other times. Percentage of upload done shown on status bar seems new for any browser and kicks ***. IE has always been rubbish and people have always been using it, what ya gonna do? Tell em you don't want their money? Think again. Embrace cross-platform all the way. Simplicity = spreadability.
