Try Avira Antivir for the best free antivirus.
For the best security suite, and to me the best even compare to paid solutions is comodo internet security. This is really a top noch security suite

I would say either Avira or Avast are slightly better than AVG for virus detection and prevention. Comodo is a good free firewall to go with the Anti Virus software.
I was using AVG for my windows but it didn't worked for me so I switched to Avast. It seems to work nice for me, and does not seem to slow anything down. I will stick to Avast until and unless it won't create problems to me.

currently been using avast for a long time already but still wanting to use kasperszky it works very well but prob is no free software....mind giving me? lolz
I always have to END PROCESS on avg whenever i want to play cstrike, no matter what i do it wont let me connect to servers and sometimes d/cs me from the interwebz
I used AVG before but newer versions slowed my old PC a bit. I discovered AVAST and it's reliable so far. I think AVAST is the least demanding on system resources and most importantly, it's free! The only downside is that it has no boot-time scanning for 64bit systems. But who cares? I use 32bit windows anyway
I am currently using free AVAST home edition antivirus so far it's working well. This is working fine and remove all types of virus. So my vote is for AVAST
