Windows Vista will be "Vista" It is not like Windows XP in many ways. Vista Business and Vista Ultimate are the better two OS's of the Vista Family. Vista is not a "bad" OS per say, other than the UAC which can be turned off. I use Windows Vista Ultimate on a daily basis, after having to do a Vista Deployment. It has its problems as with any other OS. It is a little heavy on the resources side, so if you plan on doing graphic design etc etc and having a bunch of resource intensive apps open like photoshop, fireworks, flash or what not, I would suggest you get as much ram as you can.

I will advice you very much to spend a bit more but make sure you have good RAM and processor in your laptop so you can use windows vista without load programs as vista uses alot of resources that can slow down user experience. Vista is also not like xp it still has alot of problems with program support so be sure to make sure the programs you really need dont have any major programs.

The difference is in look and some additional features but I think Windows XP is much better than Vista because I've used both and wasn't comfortable with Vista at all.

Most computer applications are moving to Vista compatability these days, so I'd recommend changing with the times. I have Vista home edition and it works well for me. Just make sure you have at least 2 gigs of Ram coz Vista tends to use up one just by itself.
