you can get a DOS window to come up from typing "cmd" in the "start search" box from the start menu.

i don't think we'll ever completely get away from DOS. i can remember arguing with classmates when i was in college over a decade ago who felt we shouldn't be learning DOS when Windows 95 was out. if you didn't know DOS, how did you recover from a system crash or install the software on a new computer?

I have almost forgotten DOS, but recently I have said thanks to myself that I have not missed the DOS lessons.

I have got a DVD full of mp3's which wasn't accessible through windows or file manager. But I needed to copy information.

I have entered cmd and started typing
F:\cd Alestorm
F:\Alestorm\cd 2008 - captain morgan's revenge
F:\Alestorm\2008 - captain morgan's revenge\>copy *.* D:\music\Power metal\alestorm....
And so forth...

It has taken about two hours to copy 4.7gigs to my HDD.... but I was satisfied!

By calling IT, and getting a slice of pizza while they deal with it.

It's kind of like asking, if you can't refine your own crude oil, how are you going to drive a car?

And if you are the IT department? (which is what we were training for)

I'd liken the crude oil more to having to write the OS yourself or manufacture the hardware of the computer

That's a fair point. But so is that most people aren't IT. Another way I could be wrong is if you provoke a catastrophic failure on your home, personal machine, and can't call IT. It can be a valuable skill, but it's also a very specialized one. Most people can get by using their computer every day, without ever knowing the command line still exists.

Touche - well said! Maybe a compromise analogy, where using the command line is like changing your own spark plugs? All I'm really trying to say is that most people can make great use of a computer without the command prompt, in much the same way that most people drive an automatic, while a few people have stories about the accident they avoided on the freeway by downshifting for more power.

I don't use DOS anymore (except DOSBox to run settlers 2 and the like), but I always have at least 3 Bash shell CLI opened at all time.

Monitoring network, log files, and simply because for many things I find the command line more effective than waving my mouse from left to right.

I use dos on a weekly bases. I work online doing technical support and it helps for pinging and traceroutes. By having pings and traceroutes done it help with the troubleshooting process. Also, dos helps me personally when I need to see how many connections I have to my computer. Everyone should know the general idea of dos and how to use it.

The Windows command prompt is NOT DOS!!!
It's the windows command prompt- completely different-
If I had my way, there would be a REAL Disk-Operating-System installed that you can run just like you used to in 95 and 98...

To be perfectly semantically correct, the DOS ended his live with Windows Millenium.
Windows 2000 and the later are based on the Windows NT kernel, which was a complete rewrite.
Windows 1, 2, 3, 3.1, 95, 98 and Millenium where addon that where running on top of MS-DOS.

What you find in modern windows, is a CLI (command line interface), which was exactly the interface between the user and the machine in MS-DOS.
It's similar, but very different in its underlying structure.

Different at the kernel level perhaps, but 99% of the commands are the same. So functionally it is almost identical.
