As one of the last dinosaurs - I DO continue to use DOS for all my important work, It is stable, reliable and copies are easily made ready for the unlikely event of computer failure.

I have two discs on my computer - one runs DOS6.2 (and in fact Windows 3.2, though I no longer use it) the other disc is dual-booted from BootMagic and carries Windows XP and all the Internet and Graphical programs.

DOS is used EVERY day to input data into a heavily programmed Q&A (still the best ever user-friendly database and integrated word processor); WordPerfect 5.1 DOS (still the best ever word-processor; try left aligning; center aligning and right aligning on the same line in YOUR wordprocessor !) and PlanPerfect for simple spreadsheet uses. I also use a telephone dialler and until recently CompuServe DOS for emails.

Yes, it IS February 2009 and I DO USE DOS for my business. Windows XP is for "playtime" !

Regards from the dinosaur - sfj642

DOS - Disc Operation System

The new computers are come up without any floppy driver since several years, so the DOS in our days unfortunately got a totally other interpretation: Daniel of Services

Yeah I think that is really an essential tool that is need to have. Even though I not using but it's better to have it when you don't need it than need it that you don't have it. But you know there is an easy way to retrieve data like using another computer then put the HDD to the computer as slave them retrieve the data where you have saved it.

I'm using it but only as my last line of data recovery. DOS is really a handy tool but they are really hand full I even having a hard time using it. I still have note book with me for the commands so I'm going to have a big problem if lost that note book.

Code:
C:\> ECHO DOS 6.22 > THINGS.TXT
C:\> ECHO ANSI/ASCII ART > THINGS.TXT
C:\> ECHO BBSING > THINGS.TXT
C:\> ECHO MPXPLAY > THINGS.TXT
C:\> MD MY
C:\MY> CD MY
C:\MY> MD FAVORITE
C:\MY> CD FAVORITE
C:\MY\FAVORITE> MOVE C:\MY\FAVORITE\THINGS.TXT .
Seriously, how else am I supposed to revel in my childhood nerdiness?

Besides, don't you miss the days when programmers thought about (limited) resources...

Ya good topic DOS is very important and we should know some of the dos basic commands. DOS directly interact with the hardware so it is good for hardware related issue, when our system is corrupt and windows is not there then DOS will help you to recover and install windows etc......

It can be a valuable skill, but it's also a very specialized one. Most people can get by using their computer every day, without ever knowing the command line still exists.

I still use DoS, Win31. and Win95 to play older games that do not seem to work very well in the new windows platforms.

DOS is really flexible it terms of use. A single line of commands can give you unique functions that can't be done with GUI apps. Still use it today for simple batch programming for some tricks. I miss Zork.

DOS is the OS, where many top computer professionals of our days learned their basics. When I started my carrier, there is no windows. So, I never forget dos and its commands.
