Normally no, but today I had to use it to flash my BIOS.

The last time I used it was to edit my bootsector cause a Bootmanager messed it up.

I have a client with a custom application that will not run in a DOS box in Windows. So 12 of his computers still run DOS 5. In order to properly maintain and test updates to the application as I work on it, I run DOS 5 as a Virtual Machine in VMWARE. Occasionally, I'll even break out an old DOS game and play it.

I use them daily to administrate my servers by using schedule tasks I can run many programs and functions I need to run daily. Very useful and powerful when managing servers.

DOS is still used but for mostly the server side folks and command line options. It is ALWAYS a part of the OS in Windows. That is the backdoor. If CMD does not work and sometimes it doesn't because of people who like to turn off options - use "command" it is a back door most IT folks now forget to close. AND one that a lot of nasty attacks still ride through on.

If you need to know how to do something. let us know EXACTLY what you want to do and we can get it to you. I am considered the "Batch Queen" and DOS is still the KING of Batch processes on MS servers.

Hi Everybody

Microsoft Disk Operating System is still being used in different ways. All windows versions are coming with core MS-DOS 8 files. It was the main Operating System for personal computers in during the 1980s.

Now a days only the DOS version 6.0 and 6.22 is recognized and supported by the Microsoft Corp.

What if you have embedded x86 system. x86 will run only on DOS because of its architecture and minimal memory and other requirements. x86 system is still being used in many countries.

To use DOS, you simple click on start and write "cmd" in run.
now here you can create or delete files or do as you want.

Here are some important DOS commands:
del, erase - delete files
rd, rmdir - delete directories
dir - show content of directories
cd, chdir - change current directory
cls - clear the screen
md, mkdir - create a directory
copy - copy of one or several files
ren, rename - rename of files or directories
type - shows the content of text files
set - shows the DOS environment variables or defines a new one
ver - shows the DOS version number
vol - shows the name of the storage drive

Hum, no...
X86 is a reference to the structure of the microprocessor.
Qnx, Linux, bsd, darwin, os/2 and many more can operate on x86, and mind you, they have their use.
Even os/2 still have applications developed as of today.

Not to bash, but the microprocessor is not tied to the os (really "os" like operating system, not "dos" specifically) in any way.

I still use DOS but that's mainly a bad habit. I don't think it's very useful these days...

Anyone knows a real useful meaning to DOS these days?

When you need to apply a batch modification to a lot of files. Rather than going clicky click one file after the other, you craft an script, and launch it.

As someone has already said here, there is no DOS in modern Windows machine but CLI (Command Line Interface) which looks like DOS and has pretty much same commands. I use it for some tasks mostly in IP world and for some Active Directory things. To my surprise I did actually see a true DOS machine not too long ago. It was running some old accounting software and the only reason it was still there is that it had some 10 year or so law requirement to be kept. Anyway, I think that if you are an everyday computer user, you really don't need to know those old DOS commands but for someone who is a network admin it's important as many tasks are done much quicker that way and as in case with Exchange 2007 some are only done in CLI.

To be honest, I still use Dos on a daily basis. Granted, its to run a ping and trace or something along those lines, its valid. On a side note, im looking at my laptop right now as its HD is dying and I am running NFTS for DOS , and my old school dos ability is saving me from heartbreak as I am transferring files from the dying drive to a USB drive. Dos to the rescue.
