i guess most of you know that this awesome OS will soon meet it's demise by 2010.
All support will be gradually reduced by that time.

and yet, Vista is not a great replacement with all those hardware and software incompatibilities.

petitions are pouring into microsoft to at least extend WindowsXP before a replacement for Vista is avilable.

This sucks, I like Vista and XP but I love using XP still. I know it could still do well too if they kept it up for few years, but whatever I don't mind Vista especially when I'm working on music.

some other PC manufacturers are still shipping products with XP loaded like Dell, so though they will stop producing this OS, i believe they will still be supported for some time.

Manufacturers are actually selling PC's installed with Windows XP as 'downgraded' pc's.

The VISTA license agreement contains a clause allowing you to downgrade to Windows XP which is great!

I happen to like XP - for the most part. MS does this with every OS, once they release a new one, they start to wind down it's predecessors, it's a planned obsolescence schedule, you have to KNOW this was coming. However, considering the poor adoption rate for Vista, retiring XP now doesn't seem like such a bright idea.

I don't know why people complain about Vista so much. It is a great operating system with an outstanding interface upgrade and lots of feature that I now find indispensable. The software compatibilities aren't that bad if you're using quality software, and I haven't experienced a single hardware compatibility issue when using newer hardware (i.e. < 5 years old.)

From a business perspective, this is the right move to make for Microsoft. They can't support Windows XP indefinitely, just like they won't support their previous operating system indefinitely. They need to be able to shift resources over to Windows Vista and Windows 7 in order to make them as good as possible.

I voted that no, they should not extend XP's life. It's been too long already. Vista is pretty lousy, but that doesn't mean we should try to run back in time. Windows Server 2003 is still the best operating system I've ever used.

Where are the polls to extend the life of Windows 95 and Windows 3.1?

Hey, I still have a pc with a win98 SE somewhere.
It runs great, and is pretty stable. Perfect to test something in IE6 or to run some legacy applications.

I heard they are actually extending XP now, so the petitions must have worked. I'm considering moving on to Linux once XP is out of date.
