Can anyone recommend a good solid, stable Linux O/S

I tried ubuntu and seem to be having DNS issues with it.

I'm not going to "upgrade" to Vista.

Thanks.

Out of all the distros I've used, I've got to recommend Gentoo. Getting it up and running is a lot harder than most distros, although I think there's a LiveCD now that resolves that issue. Gentoo's package system, community (the Gentoo Wiki is incredible), and the ability to customize it make it my favorite distro by far.

I had major issuess with ubuntu, but now that I figured how to shut off IPv6 everything seems to work flawlessly.

In the meantime I had tried the Puppy Linux - Wow is it FAST!

What ever happened to Red-Hat?

I have great results with RHEL 4. You may want to check out the free version of this which is basically Centos.

Ubuntu is my favorite, I dual-boot it with Windows XP. Though I'm not a novice its great for beginners because you don't have to use the command line for most things though I find it easier. The ubuntu forums and help site are great resources and theres so much you can do with it.

I use Gentoo for the last 5 years, but I would not recommend it for someone who is not already accustomed to GNU/Linux.

The Gentoo philosophy is "learn it!" more than "follow the wizard and click here".
It's really great to learn, and every time I've installed Gentoo, Suze or any other distro, I've always come back to Gentoo, but it's just not for everyone.

When you update the system, you have to carefully review what is upgraded. And as everything is compiled from source (apart some exceptions) installing a system can take a really long time.
My current comp. tooke me 2 days to be 100% installed (base + dev tools + X + OpenOffice + E17) on a intel core duo 1.8Ghz with 2Go ram.

Definitively not for everyone's taste.
