I'm a computer dork. I grew up on an Apple IIgs and then moved to the world of PCs. Between my husband and me, we have 9 computers (and 6 of them are mine).

Here's what I have:
1. A laptop for travel. I'm a journalist-blogger so I travel every so often to conferences. My 12" notebook works very well for liveblogging. The model: Dell Inspiron 700m with WinXP.
2. A laptop that I use as a desktop: My Dell XPS M1710 (also on XP) is my big productivity machine. It's a brick, but I love having so much screen real estate to get work done.
3. A Linux machine that I built myself: It's a simple setup running Fedora 8. I use it almost always remotely.
4. My media center: It's actually a full-sized ATX case that I built with 6 hard drives (plus 3 USB drives attached). I back up my photographs and store media (music, videos) on the computer. I actually never physically sit at the machine though! (And yes, you guessed it, it runs XP.)
5. An old Dell laptop: It's an Inspiron 8600 (with XP) that's about 4 years old. Runs XP and I use it to test applications for blog posts.
6. A Macbook Pro. I actually just got this and I'm starting to learn how to use it. (And in truth, it arrived with a small physical deformity so Apple has it now!)

My husband has another 700m (we distinguish ours because I have stickers on mine) and 2 Dell desktops. All run XP.

When it comes to computers, each serve different purposes as I mentioned before. I also salvage old parts to keep my older machines running. The desktops have had a long life (but I've had to take them apart more than five times due to hard drive failures, power supply problems, and whatever else is related to a failing computer) but I'm big on laptops (especially warranties) so I try to stay current on all of them.

My desk has 2 custom machines that I built, one is used for general stuff and the other is being used as a server. My wife has 1 at her desk. The kids have 1 in their bedroom. We also have 2 laptops, one is used for school and the other is used in our bedroom. I also have 3 towers down in the basement that are used for parts. I could probably build 1 complete machine with those.

4 are running XP Pro and 2 are running XP Home.

You totally should. It's so much fun...albeit filled with aches and pains from getting scratched on PCI cards and the like. I think that happens to me EVERY time!

We have 2 in the house that we actually use. Both are and will continue to run XP-pro.

° There is also an old Amiga 500 down there (with a 8086 ibm pc extension card!!)

In the flat I have:
° 1 p4 3Ghz server right under my desk (gentoo linux),
° My workstation dual core 1.8 Ghz with Gentoo linux too, but a 5Go partition with XP, when I REALLY need it (which was around September the last time I booted it)
° 1 old P2 800Mhz without hdd
° 1 almost old celeron 1.5Ghz laptop bricked (they don't like to fall from a table..)
° 1 P4 2Ghz that I salvaged last week from the trashes. It just need a new case and an hdd (but I have plenty of thoses) to let it run again.
° 1 Toshiba laptop buyed 3 weeks ago to replace the bricked one.
° And a couple of palm pilot / windows mobile PDA, in various states...

If anyone has tips about how to recycle a perfect wide laptop screen for a desktop screen, I'm really interested.
My old 19" 4:3 lcd screen could use a retirement and as I have a laptop which don't boot anymore but whose screen is ok...

Right now I have 4, 2 desktops and two notebooks. 3 with XP and 1 with Vista. I am thinking about buying a new one. I recently saw the new extra thin Apple MacBook Air and I must say that I am very tempted. Will I resist the temptation ? Lol

Work laptop is XP Pro.

2 home boxes are Debian Linux (used for both small server and desktop).

I personally have 1 computer, a desktop. I custom built it: Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz, nVidia 7300GT, 1GB RAM, 200 & 250 GB HDDs, Sony DVD Burner, 22" Samsung Widescreen monitor. I dual-boot Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu Linux. A bit of an older system parts-wise but it does everything I need it to.

Hopefully I'll have a Macbook Air to add to that in about a month.

The laptop with Linux isn't a great laptop but it does the job.

A normal assembled computer running on Windows XP
An apple Macbook - MAC OSX
A Sony Vaio laptop running on Windows Vista!

Happy with all the three!

A server (P4, 1 GB RAM, GeForce 6800 GT) with Debian, a desktop (Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, GeForce 8800 GTS) with XP, a laptop (Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, 8600 GT) with XP, and an old P3 desktop with Windows ME sitting in my garage.

Btw i checked all the above posts and see that most of you have basic computers and laptops.

I just run two machines daily..

Dual Core P4 3.2GHz machines with WinXP Pro for cad work on both of them..

Laptop that hasn't been out of the drawer in 4 years and a room at the other end of the basement with "working" hardware going all the way back to the Tandy CoCo 1 and my little Mattel Aquarius with little chicklet keys etc.

Some day I'll put together a little mini museum..

I think the tech field is still dominated by PCs. I believe I heard just a few weeks ago that Mac has a 6% share. I hope to change that soon. In the meantime, I'm writing on my XP lappy.

I have two computers that I use daily right now. One of them is a HP laptop which runs on vista and the other is a Dell desktop that runs on XP. They each have their pros and cons but I am starting to like the laptop a lot more.
