How to Lan Win Vista with Win XP..

Please give me the solution to how to connect my Laptop having Win Vista With my Desktop Pc having Win XP sp2.
I have the LAN cards in both the Machines..
I also have the Lan Connecting Wire..
What else i Need??

is your router DHCP capable?
does it have a built in DNS server?

do you know anything about setting up a network?

I have my Vista laptop setup thru my router to my WinXP desktop - no problems at all - except printer sharing... it keeps telling me there's no access to the printer and that's even after I installed the Vista compatibility update !

Other than that.. no problems.

Ok there is a way but without knowing a lot more about your network setup it's impossible to be specific.

wireless modem, What make & model

Is this your internet connection?
Are your machines both connected to it?

Yes both r connected to internet....

nd plz also tell me if i waana connect directly 2 computers having (VISTA and XP) direcly through cross cable....

in win XP the computer is showing limited connectivity nd in win VISTA its showing UNIDENTIFIED network when i directly connect the 2 computers..

i also changed the IP addresses to 192.168.0.1 nd 192.168.0.2
nw what next to do........

Jimmy,
Did you make sure both computers have the same workgroup name?
By default, Vista is named "WORKGROUP" and WinXP is named "MSHOME".

i had already changed the names to WORKGROUP, but still the the connectivety is limited....

Just to check a few things:

Can they both see each other?
Can you ping the laptop from your machine, and your machine from your laptop?
You have connected the two with a cross-over cable?
Have you made sure the subnet masks are the same, which should be 255.255.255.0?
They are both in the same workgroup?
Can your they both see each other when you use your wireless connection?

yes the both having the same subnet mask.....
and same workgroup also...

yes i have connected by cross-over cable...
in win xp its showing limited connectivity..
and in win vista its showing unidentied network...

i hadn't connect them wirelessly

Have you tried another crossover cable?

Also can your laptop and your machine connect to your wireless network?

yes i have 2 cables and the problem is same...

presently i am using the WiFi on laptop.. but my desktop pc has no WiFi...

but i transfer the data by bluetooth..

What make/model is your router? It's rare that a wireless router doesn't have an ethernet port.
