on my site is a table listing some positions. I got feedback it would be much better if the table was sortable. My question is - as I'm very new to coding and web site design - how may I make such a table? What should I read/learn to make such things - html, java? Or is there more, maybe some databases? If I could search for keywords in this table, this would be just perfect. Hope I'm here in the right forum

Usually what you're talking about is done with the help of a database. It sounds like you aren't using one now, so it would take some work on your part. This would involve some form of SQL, and either ASP.NET or PHP.

You might be able to achieve what you're wanting to do using xml and java.

I made this funny sortable table but well, it is just ugly. At least I learned how to spell "java" This filtering table is great, just beyond my dreams!
I don't know how it works yet but I'll start immediately with my research.
