How to go about TRICKscary web page...???

Hi

I was once sent a link to a web page some time ago that initially started with background music which was a popular lovey dovey type of song, and the only thing displayed on the page was the lyrics to the song...., then suddenly, a very very scary image filled the screen with a horrific & very loud scream. No pages changed or loaded, it was all built into that one page. It really scared the beans outta me! and all my mates! hilarious..

I would like to replicate that or create something very similar, but to be honest i really don't know where to start..the more i think of it the more complex it seems to become.

Can i do that with just html or javascript ? although i have Macromedia Studio MX , i want to have a page that doesn't need flash player to be viewed etc.. can anybody please give a rough idea which would be the simplest way to achieve this fantastic trick ??
there was no redirection to another page, no popups...it was all on the one page but had some kind of delay...
Also if anybody has seen a page like what i have described and still has the url, please pass it on.

with the kind of requirement you are saying, it is achievable only thru flash.

i was thinking it was possible with some kind of JS timer event that would fire a "load" or multiple "loads".

Or maybe a very well timed Animated gif. that's going be very tricky also. ****, was hoping to have this done by halloween..lol i am VERY SLOW...

Ok looks like i'll be giving flash yet another outing.When i have the finished the project or found something like it i'll post it here.somewhere.

I think it should certainly be possible to do it with an animated gif. It would take quite a lot of playing around with though. Getting the timing right might be tricky. At least with flash you could have the whole thing linked together nicely.

You should be able to do what you want with Javascript and DHTML layers. By using a Javascript timer (as you indicated) and hiding an image on a layer above the background image, at a given time (ie. 15 seconds) display layer x. You should even be able to have multiple layers and randomly show/hide them by setting variables for the which layer to show and what time to show them.

I remember this one animated gif where the person sends you the link saying "watch this carefully". It looks like a webcam in a dirty basement. After about thirty seconds this ghostly girl comes zooming from the back of the room up to the camera. I swear it scared the mess out of me. But it didn't have any sound. It was just an animated with a layout around it to look like a webcam.

Just the sort of thing I want to do.
Flash really is the only way to do it effectively.

However it may be a couple of weeks as i am really really slow.. i seem to get side tracked by all the emails offers to :
add 8" to my *****, win the lottery in five countries simultanesouly, help attract women with pheromone spray, become an internet millionaire etc... no i didn't visit a porn site honest.*ahem* some bugger decided to give my email address to every bloody site on the net!!!

can somebody please develop a freeware solution to dectecting and deleting emails with user names made up of random letters ie... suzie_xnywzybfqoustrnkpprlsgamvyz@yahoo.com
