My advice is go to Barnes and Nobel or Borders - - Get a large cup of coffee and spend at least an hour reading the Flash books.
Go prepared with a list of questions.... 'How do I.... do this, or that, or whatever?
Spend enough time with each book to determine which book makes sense to you and which books provide technical answers to your questions at a level you can understand (these books are targeted to all levels of programming skills - Some will be too simple for you and thus worthless because you won't read them and some are written for the 'super programmer type' and thus too deep and you probably won't understand the explanations').
I am personally biased toward the 'Bibles' as they not only take me as deep as I want to go but they also are built like a programming tutorial - - When I buy one of these books I start at chapter one, read each chapter and do every exercise in the book - - takes about a week to finish a book but when I'm done I find that I'm a pretty good programmer on that subject and know where in the book to look for all the answers that arise on my next project.
One final recommendation - - Don't get hung up on Flash 8 - - If you find a Flash MX book that you think is excellent buy it - - You'll be able to adapt to the minor changes in Flash 8.
