Anyone help with a log-in system?

Hey everyone.
I am currently working on a website for a friend and wondered if anybody would be able to offer me any guidance on the following (which my friend is requesting):

I need an area on the website where people can sell their downloads, a subscription will be paid by them to do this for a year! With the subscription I also want people to have their own password which allows them to edit their own information (calender etc)!

If anybody knows of any systems which could do this, or knows what I need to do in order for this to work, it would be greatly appreciated.

That's one **** of a task you've taken on right there, hardybabe.

First and foremost, you're going to have to know a server-side programming language. ASP, PHP, CGI, Perl, take your pick, but you'd better know something that will process code without outputting all of it.

Second, since it's a paid subscription, you'll need some sort of payment processor. This would depend on your country, but if you want something easy, go with PayPal (yeah, it sucks, but at least you don't have to program any e-commerce stuff).

If this sounds overwhelming, I apologize. But you have picked one of those jobs for which there is no quick fix or easy answer.
