stretching cells

hi all,
whenever i make templates i get the problem of all the content boxes stretchin with the main one. the graphics stretch fine but say for example the affilaites box is massive on a big page.

can i somehow make them not stretch, i know you can

plz dont diss me im pretty new to the templates scene,

if the width of those boxes are specified in %values they will stretch

trying give them a defined width, say 400px or what ever.

nup doesnt work, it still stretches along with the main content box. could smebody help please
