I have set up a site for my daughter's brownie pack and it includes a password-protected area for photos etc. This is done using .htpasswd and generally works fine.

However, a small percentage of the users are reporting that, on selecting the menu option to take them to the protected area, they do not get the standard user/password but get taken straight to the 401 error page without being able to input user/password.

Any ideas? These users tend to be the ones with the older computers, 56k modems etc etc. I don't know whether anyone else has experienced this.

Browser security settings perhaps.

I also find people who browse behind a work place proxy or firewall will also have a bad time (considering all the restrictions in force at the work place).

I tend to think that if it works for one it should work for the other. But experience dictates this is never true.
